Qayroqqum lies in the Sughd region of northern Tajikistan, near the western end of the Kayrakkum Reservoir, a large body of water created on the Syr Darya in the Soviet period and sometimes called the Tajik Sea. On a map, the reservoir fills the view to the north, and the town sits on flat ground beside it, not far east of Khujand.
The town grew up as a planned Soviet settlement, and its streets show it: a fairly regular layout of straight roads and residential blocks, with industrial areas nearby.
