Qonce, known until 2021 as King William's Town, lies inland from East London on the Buffalo River. The river curves around the old centre, and the nineteenth-century grid of the colonial town fits inside this loop. Around it, townships and newer suburbs spread across the surrounding hills, with the main roads leading toward the coast and Bhisho, the provincial capital, next door.
The town has an important place in South African history. Steve Biko grew up nearby and is buried in Ginsberg, on the edge of the town, where a garden of remembrance marks his grave. The Amathole Museum and the old public buildings show the town's long history as a frontier and administrative centre.
