Ramos Arizpe lies in southeastern Coahuila, immediately northeast of Saltillo, and the two now form a single metropolitan area. The land is high, dry and open, ringed by the ridges of the Sierra Madre Oriental, and on a map the city appears as a sequence of neighbourhoods, industrial parks and highway corridors laid out across the valley floor.

The town takes its name from Miguel Ramos Arizpe, a priest and politician born here who is remembered as a founder of Mexican federalism.
