D'Kaart
Regensburg sits where the Danube reaches its northernmost point and the Regen joins it from the north. From above, the river divides into channels around two long islands, the Oberer and Unterer Wöhrd, and the old town lies on the southern bank in a dense, almost oval mass. Across the water, the small district of Stadtamhof occupies its own strip of land between river arms, so the centre reads as a cluster of land and water.
The Stone Bridge, built in the twelfth century, crosses the Danube in a long line of arches linking the old town and Stadtamhof, and it remains one of the defining shapes on any map of the city. South of the river, the medieval street pattern is intact: narrow lanes, small squares and blocks shaped by old property lines, with the Gothic cathedral of St Peter near the centre.
The old town, together with Stadtamhof, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, valued as one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Germany. Its outline still echoes the Roman fort of Castra Regina that once stood here. A Regensburg map poster shows how tightly the historic core holds together, then loosens into ring roads, rail lines and later districts spreading south and west.

The Oberer and Unterer Wöhrd stretch along the river as long, slender shapes, splitting the water into several channels and giving the centre a layered, braided look.
South of the river, the old town packs narrow lanes and irregular squares around the cathedral, one of the most complete medieval street networks in Germany.
