Sabae sits on the broad, level floor of the Fukui plain, and from above its streets form a tight, practical mesh of rice fields, factories and houses. A north–south rail line and a main road run through the middle of town. The ground stays flat until the eastern edge, where the streets stop against low wooded hills and the grid comes apart into winding lanes.
