Saga lies on the broad, flat Saga Plain in northern Kyushu. The land slopes almost imperceptibly toward the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea. From above, the city is threaded with small creeks and irrigation canals. The streets follow their lines, and the rectangular moats of the former castle mark out the centre.
Saga was the seat of the Nabeshima clan, lords of the Saga domain, which became one of the leaders of Japan's modernisation in the nineteenth century. The rebuilt main hall of Saga Castle now houses a history museum. Every autumn, the Saga International Balloon Fiesta fills the sky above the riverbanks with hundreds of hot-air balloons.
