Sakai, in Fukui Prefecture, was formed in 2006 by merging several towns, and its map reflects that. Separate centres are spread across a wide plain of rice fields, joined by roads and rail. The shoreline is the city's most dramatic edge. North of Mikuni, the Tōjinbō cliffs rise from the sea in columns of basalt, one of the best-known coastal sights on this side of Japan.
