Uruguay River edge
The western side of the map is the river itself, a wide band of open space that forms the national border and gives the whole composition a firm, natural frame.

Salto Map Poster & Print
Salto sits on the east bank of the Uruguay River in the northwest of the country, and from above the river is the first thing you notice. It is wide, it has a firm edge, and it marks the border with Argentina. The city spreads inland from the water in a regular Spanish colonial grid, with square blocks laid out almost like graph paper toward the surrounding farmland.
Streets run in long parallel lines, broken now and then by plazas that appear as small open squares in the pattern. Near the riverbank the grid gives way to parks and waterfront roads, and upstream the Salto Grande dam and its reservoir leave a very different kind of shape: an engineered straight line across the water, carrying a crossing between the two countries.
Salto is one of the larger Uruguayan cities outside Montevideo. It is known for the citrus orchards in the surrounding department and for the thermal springs that draw visitors to the region. The writer Horacio Quiroga was born here. A Salto map poster shows a clean inland grid meeting a wide, calm river, a composition that works well in black and white.

Colonial street grid
Square blocks repeat steadily across the centre, and the plazas show up as small open squares, so the street pattern reads as an orderly texture.
Salto Grande upstream
North of the city, the dam and reservoir form a strong straight line across the river, a man-made feature that contrasts with the natural bends of the shoreline.
