Salvador occupies a triangular peninsula that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Baía de Todos os Santos, one of the largest bays on the Brazilian coast. Founded in 1549, it served as the first capital of colonial Brazil until 1763. Away from the old core, the city spreads across hills and valleys, with major avenues following the valley floors and neighbourhoods climbing the ridges between them.
