Samal, officially the Island Garden City of Samal, lies in the Davao Gulf opposite Davao City. It covers Samal Island and several smaller islands, separated from the Mindanao mainland by a narrow channel. For many people in Davao, Samal is the nearest escape to the beach, reached by a short ferry crossing.
From above, the city has the outline of an island rather than a town. Its settlements are spread along the coast, linked by a road that circles much of the shoreline.
