Samālūţ lies in Minya Governorate in Upper Egypt, on the western bank of the Nile, north of Minya city. The town forms a long band between the river and the irrigated farmland of the valley. On the map, its streets run roughly parallel to the Nile. A canal and a railway line also run north to south along the valley.
The valley here is narrow, and its shape is easy to read from above. There is a band of green, cultivated land on the western side and a strip of water in the middle.
