Sānand lies west of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, on the flat plains that extend toward the Nal Sarovar wetlands. The town became widely known in 2008, when Tata Motors moved production of its Nano car here after leaving West Bengal. Other automobile and manufacturing companies followed, turning Sānand into one of the main industrial centres of the Ahmedabad region and changing the scale of the landscape around the historic town.
