Sanandaj is the capital of Iran's Kurdistan Province and lies in a valley of the Zagros Mountains. On a map the city stretches along the valley floor, so its main avenues run lengthwise. The city took shape in the Safavid era as a fortified seat of the regional Ardalan rulers, and its older name, Sine, is still used locally.
