Sanlúcar de Barrameda sits at the mouth of the Guadalquivir, where Andalusia's great river finally opens into the Atlantic. On a map the town sits on the left bank of the estuary. The estuary also has a place in maritime history. Columbus sailed from here on his third voyage, and in 1519 the Magellan expedition left Sanlúcar on the journey that became the first circumnavigation.
