Sanming lies in the mountainous interior of Fujian Province, in southeastern China. The main urban area occupies a narrow valley along the Sha River, and the terrain leaves little room for expansion. As a result the city stretches along the water in a long, winding shape, with buildings pressed between the river and steep, wooded slopes on either side.
The city developed largely as an industrial centre in the second half of the twentieth century. Its wider administrative area is known for forested mountains and for Taining, whose red sandstone landscape is part of the China Danxia UNESCO World Heritage Site. That upland character is visible even within the city, where the hills set firm limits on the streets.
