Santiago fills a wide basin between the Andes to the east and the lower coastal range to the west. On a map, the centre is a clear colonial grid laid out from the Plaza de Armas after the city's founding by Pedro de Valdivia in 1541. Two hills break the grid: the small, fortified Cerro Santa Lucía in the centre and the much larger Cerro San Cristóbal to the north-east, home to the Parque Metropolitano. The Alameda runs parallel to the river as the main axis.
