Sanxenxo lines the northern shore of the Ría de Pontevedra, one of the long, drowned river valleys that shape the Galician coast. Because the ría opens to the southwest, the town faces south across sheltered water. That orientation helps explain why it became one of Galicia's best-known summer resorts.
