São Jorge is one of the central islands of the Azores, a slender strip of land more than 50 kilometres long and only a few kilometres wide. It is essentially a single volcanic ridge, with a line of cones along its spine and high cliffs dropping to the sea on both sides. From above it looks like a blade laid across the Atlantic.
At the foot of the cliffs lie the fajãs, flat platforms of land formed by landslides or lava flows. Many are farmed or dotted with houses. They are the island's signature feature, and some, such as Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, are reached mainly on foot. São Jorge is also known for its cheese, made from the milk of cows grazing on the upland pastures.
