São Nicolau belongs to the Barlavento, the windward group of Cabo Verde, and its outline is one of the most distinctive in the archipelago. A broad, mountainous western section gives way to a long, slender eastern arm that runs out toward the sea for many kilometres. From above the island looks almost like a bent limb, with the coast tightening as it heads east.
The high ground culminates in Monte Gordo, the island's highest point and the core of a natural park where moisture from passing clouds supports greener slopes than much of Cabo Verde. The main town, Ribeira Brava, sits in a narrow valley inland from the north coast, while Tarrafal de São Nicolau lies on the south-western shore as the island's port. A winding road links the two across the hills.
Ribeira Brava is also remembered for its nineteenth-century seminary, one of the first secondary schools in Cabo Verde and an important influence on the country's literary life.
