Shaoxing sits on the flat Ningshao Plain south of Hangzhou Bay, a landscape that has been drained, dyked and canalled for more than two thousand years. On the map, water is everywhere: canals run alongside streets, rivers loop around the old town, and small lakes and ponds scatter across the surrounding districts. The historic centre still follows the pattern of a water city.
The Zhedong Canal, part of the Grand Canal World Heritage listing, passes through the city from west to east. Old neighbourhoods such as the area around Cangqiao Street keep narrow lanes lined with waterways and arched stone bridges. Beyond the core the city has grown into newer districts, including Keqiao to the west, known for its textile markets, with a wider and more regular street pattern.
Shaoxing is famous for its yellow rice wine and as the birthplace of the writer Lu Xun, whose family home is preserved in the city.
