Shella lies in Meghalaya in northeast India, on the southern escarpment of the Khasi Hills, directly above the border with Bangladesh. From above, the landscape changes dramatically over a short distance: steep, folded hillsides and gorges to the north, and a wide, flat floodplain to the south.
This part of Meghalaya is among the wettest places on Earth, close to the famously rainy Sohra area. The heavy monsoon feeds streams and waterfalls that cut down through the escarpment, and the slopes are known for orchards and groves. Shella was historically the seat of one of the Khasi states, or hima.
