Sōja lies in southern Okayama Prefecture, just west of the city of Okayama, on land crossed by the Takahashi River. From above, the town is a mix of streets, rail lines and rice paddies spread across a flat plain, with low, wooded hills around the edges. The area was once the heart of the ancient Kibi kingdom, and the landscape still carries traces of that past. The five-storied pagoda of Bitchū Kokubun-ji temple stands among the fields east of the town and is one of the best-known sights in the prefecture. Burial mounds from the Kofun period are scattered across the plain.
