The town is widely credited with starting winter tourism in the Alps in the 1860s, and it hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948. In winter the frozen lake becomes a venue in its own right, used for events including the White Turf horse races, while the Cresta Run and the Olympia Bob Run both descend toward Celerina.
