Sunch’ŏn lies in South Pyongan Province, north of Pyongyang, in the valley of the Taedong River. On a map the river is the clearest feature, bending past the city while hills close in on either side. The urban area stretches along the valley floor, with roads and rail lines following the flat ground.

Main roads run the length of the valley and are crossed by shorter streets, and the rail network links the city with Pyongyang and the north.
