Telavi is the main town of Kakheti, Georgia's wine region, built on the lower slopes of the Gombori range above the broad Alazani valley. For a time Telavi was the royal seat of the kingdom of Kakheti, and the fortified residence of King Erekle II, Batonis Tsikhe, still stands in the centre. Nearby grows a huge plane tree said to be about nine centuries old. Vineyards and wineries surround the town, and the Alazani valley is among the best-known wine landscapes in the Caucasus.
