The Bronx is the only New York City borough attached to the North American mainland. Its western edge follows the Harlem River, separating it from Manhattan, while the East River and Long Island Sound form its southern and eastern shores. From above, the borough looks like a wedge of dense streets, bounded by water on three sides and by Westchester County to the north.
The Bronx River runs down the middle of the borough from north to south, passing through the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo before reaching the East River. The terrain rises and falls, bending streets around ridges.
