Tikrīt lies in northern Iraq on the west bank of the Tigris, north of Baghdad on the road to Mosul. The oldest part of the city sits on high ground above the river. On the map the urban area spreads westward from the bank across a flat, dry plateau, and main roads and the highway cut long, straight lines through the land around it.
The city has a long past. It is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Saladin, the twelfth-century sultan. In modern times it was the home region of Saddam Hussein, whose large palace compound occupies a stretch of the riverbank. Tikrīt was heavily damaged in the fighting of 2014 and 2015 and has been gradually rebuilding since.
