Directly opposite lies Teresina, the capital of Piauí, and the two cities form one connected urban area split by the water. Bridges carry road and rail traffic across, and a large share of Timon's residents work or study on the other side.
From above, the river is the defining feature. It bends past the town in a broad, meandering line, with the grid of Timon filling the land to the east. The streets are mostly regular and low-rise, extending outward over flat ground toward the open country of Maranhão.
