Just north of the city the river divides, with the Kollidam branch running parallel to the main channel, and the long island between them holds the temple town of Srirangam. Srirangam's Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes in the world. On the city side, the Rockfort rises abruptly from the old town, a massive outcrop crowned by the Ucchi Pillayar Temple, with bazaar streets packed around its base.
