Tōgane lies in the east of Chiba Prefecture, on the inland edge of the Kujūkuri plain, a broad flat area that stretches toward one of Japan's longest sandy beaches. From above, the city is a mix of old streets, suburban housing and fields, with low wooded hills to the west and flat rice fields running to the east.
The map has a particular historical line. Tōgane is at one end of the Onari Kaidō, a straight road from Funabashi traditionally associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu's falconry trips in the early Edo period. The railway and more recent roads cross the city in other directions, and a university campus adds a large, open block to the western side.
This is not a city of famous landmarks, and its appeal is in the pattern: a Japanese country town becoming a commuter city, with paddies, hills and streets together. A Tōgane map poster shows that balance clearly, and the fine grain of Japanese streets is especially well suited to black and white.
