Toretsk lies in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, in the heart of the Donbas coalfield. For much of the twentieth century it was called Dzerzhynsk, and it was renamed in 2016. Its map reflects the mining economy that built it: residential districts grouped around former pits, railway lines linking them, and large conical spoil heaps rising above the steppe.
The town grew in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries as coal mining spread across the region. It formed a loose network of settlements with no single compact centre. From 2014 it stood close to the front line of the war, and during the Russian invasion it suffered severe destruction that forced most of its residents to leave.
