From above, Toyota has two distinct parts. The urban core sits in the west, laid out as a compact grid on the Yahagi River, with rail lines and arterial roads threading through it. The city was once called Koromo. It took the name Toyota in 1959, after the carmaker that had grown up there, and it is still closely tied to the automotive industry.
