Trier lies on the Moselle River in western Germany, close to the border with Luxembourg. From above, the city spreads along the river's east bank in a broad valley, with steep, vineyard-covered slopes rising on both sides. The historic centre sits inside a ring of avenues that follows the line of the old walls, and several bridges cross the Moselle to the western districts.
Founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum, Trier is often called Germany's oldest city. It still has an unusual number of Roman monuments: the Porta Nigra city gate, the Imperial Baths, the amphitheatre, the Basilica of Constantine and the Roman Bridge, whose piers still carry traffic today. Karl Marx was born here in 1818.
