Tula was the capital of the Toltec civilisation, and its best-known monuments are the Atlantes, tall stone warrior figures standing on top of Pyramid B. In the city centre, the sixteenth-century Franciscan church, now the cathedral, has massive, fortress-like walls. The area is also home to a large oil refinery south of the city.
