Ulundi lies in northern KwaZulu-Natal, on open, rolling ground north of the White Umfolozi River. It was purpose-built in the 1970s as the capital of the KwaZulu homeland, and later shared the role of provincial capital until that settled on Pietermaritzburg. The area is central to Zulu history. Nearby stood oNdini, the royal homestead of King Cetshwayo. On the plain outside the town, the Battle of Ulundi in July 1879 ended the Anglo-Zulu War.
