União dos Palmares sits in the interior of Alagoas, where the coastal plain gives way to rolling hills. From above, the town forms a tight cluster of streets that follows the valley of the Mundaú River. The river's winding course and the green slopes around it do most of the work in framing the urban core. The result is an irregular outline shaped more by terrain than by planning.
The town's name, and much of its place in Brazilian memory, comes from the Quilombo dos Palmares. This was the largest settlement of people who escaped slavery in colonial Brazil, and Zumbi dos Palmares was its best-known leader. Its heart was on the Serra da Barriga, the ridge that overlooks the town and is now a memorial park. The poet Jorge de Lima was born here.
