Valle de Santiago lies in the south of Guanajuato, in the broad agricultural lowlands of the Bajío. The town has a compact colonial-era centre with roughly regular blocks, surrounded by fields divided into long parcels. What makes the area unusual on a map is its volcanic landscape: a series of explosion craters, known locally as hoyas, sits just outside the town.
These craters are often called the Siete Luminarias, the seven lights. Some are dry, some have held lakes, and several have almost perfectly circular rims that are easy to pick out from above.
