Vence sits on a rise in the hills behind Nice, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean, and one clear shape dominates its map: the old town, an almost oval knot of narrow lanes once enclosed by walls. Around it, the newer town unrolls along roads that bend with the slope, and villas scatter among terraced gardens on the land that falls toward the coast.
Historic gates lead into the old centre, and inside, the lanes converge on the former cathedral and a few small squares. On paper this core reads as a dense, fine-grained patch set against the looser boulevards that circle it. To the north, the limestone cliffs known as the Baous rise steeply, and the streets thin out quickly where the ground climbs.
Vence has a long association with artists. Henri Matisse designed the Chapelle du Rosaire, completed in 1951, down to its stained glass and vestments, and Marc Chagall lived in the town for several years.
