Visby is the main town of Gotland, Sweden's largest island, and sits on the west coast facing the Baltic. Its best-known feature is the medieval ring wall, roughly three and a half kilometres long and punctuated by towers, which still encloses most of the old town. On a map the wall draws a clear arc around the dense medieval streets and meets the shoreline at both ends.
Inside the wall, narrow streets climb from the harbour up a limestone cliff to the upper town. The ruins of many medieval churches stand among the houses, alongside the cathedral of St Mary.
