Voi lies in Taita Taveta County in southern Kenya, where the Nairobi–Mombasa highway and the railway cross the open plains between the coast and the interior. On a map the town is compact and linear, its streets gathered around the transport corridor, with the Voi River tracing a thin line nearby and large empty spaces opening in every direction.
The town owes its existence to the Uganda Railway, built at the turn of the twentieth century, and it still sits on the modern Standard Gauge Railway line. It is also the main gateway to Tsavo East National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Kenya, while the Taita Hills rise to the west.
