D'Kaart
Wakimachi sits on the Yoshino River in western Tokushima, and its map is shaped by that broad, braided channel. The town occupies a narrow strip of flat ground along the south bank, where streets run roughly parallel to the water before the land rises into wooded slopes. Since 2005 it has been part of the city of Mima, but the old name still describes a distinct and readable townscape.
The best-known lane is the Udatsu street, a row of merchant houses whose raised firewalls, called udatsu, once signalled wealth from the indigo trade that moved goods along the river. On a map it appears as a long, straight line close to the water, with short cross lanes feeding into it. The pattern is modest but unmistakable: a trading street laid out to face the river.
A Wakimachi map poster reduces all this to a few confident gestures: the wide river with its gravel bars, the bridges reaching across to the north shore, the dense merchant core and the looser housing behind it. Farmland and hillside fill the remaining space. It is a quiet composition that rewards anyone who knows the town, or who simply likes a river drawn at full width.
One of Shikoku's major rivers crosses the frame as a wide band of water and gravel bars, dividing the town from the opposite bank and giving the map its horizontal axis.
The preserved street of indigo merchant houses reads as a single straight line near the river, the historic spine from which the rest of the town grew.
Bridges stitch Wakimachi to the north bank, drawn as thin, deliberate strokes across the water and among the clearest details on the poster.

Firwat Wakimachi
People hang Wakimachi for the river and the old street: a hometown, a stop on a journey through Shikoku, or a family connection to the indigo trade. The map is calm and horizontal, which suits a hallway, a long shelf or the wall above a desk.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, adding a family name or the year of a visit. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Paper and Sand bring out the softness of the riverbanks particularly well.
