Washington in Tyne and Wear looks very different from older English towns on a map. It was designated a new town in the 1960s and planned as a set of separate villages and districts, each with its own curving residential streets, linked by a network of distributor roads and roundabouts. Green spaces fill the gaps between them.
The River Wear passes along the southern side of the town, adding a natural, winding line to an otherwise planned composition. Major roads, including the routes toward Newcastle, Sunderland and the A1, run past the edges, and a large industrial area to the north adds wide, rectangular footprints to the map.

Washington Old Hall, at the heart of the original village, was the ancestral home of the family of George Washington, first president of the United States, whose surname comes from this place.
