Whakatane sits at the mouth of the Whakatāne River on the eastern Bay of Plenty, and the map makes its setting unusually clear. By local tradition the town's name comes from Wairaka, who is said to have saved the Mātaatua canoe from drifting out to sea. A statue of her stands on a rock near the river entrance.
