The town's plan is the classic one of the old Transvaal: a regular grid of broad streets laid out around a central axis, with townships and newer extensions sitting apart from the original core.
It is the administrative seat of the Maquassi Hills municipality and a service town for the surrounding farms. The district is also known for alluvial diamond diggings, which have drawn prospectors to its river gravels for generations.
