Wŏnju lies in the south-west of Gangwon Province, in a basin opened by small rivers and bounded by mountains. The Chiaksan range rises sharply on the eastern side and gives the map a dense, dark edge of ridges and valleys. The older core sits near a central stream. There, the restored site of the Gangwon provincial office recalls the centuries when Wŏnju was the administrative seat of the region. Newer districts stretch out around it in larger, more regular blocks, including an innovation city planned in the 2010s for relocated public institutions.
Chiaksan National Park is the city's best-known landscape, with steep trails and the temple of Guryongsa in its valleys. The area is also known for hanji, traditional Korean paper, which the city celebrates with a festival.
