Yur’yev-Pol’skiy lies in Vladimir Oblast, north-west of Vladimir, among the open fields that gave it its name, from the Russian word for field. It was founded in 1152 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, and the outline of the early fortress is still visible on the map as a rounded ring of earthen ramparts enclosing the historic centre beside the Koloksha river.
Inside the ramparts stands the Cathedral of St George, completed in the 1230s and known for the carved white stone reliefs that cover its walls, one of the notable monuments of pre-Mongol Russian architecture. The town is part of the Golden Ring of historic towns north-east of Moscow, and a former monastery near the centre now houses a museum.
