From above, Zaria looks less like one city than several. The old walled town sits to the south, a dense mass of lanes and compounds inside the remains of its earthen walls. Across open ground to the north lie the straighter streets built around the railway in the colonial era. The spaces in between are still easy to see on the map.
Zaria was the seat of the Hausa kingdom of Zazzau, and its history is tied to Queen Amina, the ruler remembered in local tradition for building defensive walls. The emir's palace still stands in the old city. Around it the streets bend and fork the way footpaths do, and they never settle into a pattern.
