Akçaabat lies on the Black Sea coast just west of Trabzon, and the two places now almost merge along the shore. From above, the town is long and narrow. A coastal highway and the promenade follow the waterline, and the streets climb quickly up the steep hillsides behind them. Valleys cut inland at intervals, and houses scatter up the slopes among hazelnut and tea gardens.
The town is famous across Turkey for Akçaabat köftesi, a style of grilled meatballs served in restaurants along the main road. It is also closely associated with the horon, the energetic folk dance of the eastern Black Sea. Inland, the high summer pastures, known as yaylas, draw people up from the coast during the warmer months.
