Çaycuma sits in the green hills of Zonguldak Province in northern Turkey, a short distance inland from the Black Sea. On a map, the Filyos River decides almost everything. It swings through the valley in broad bends, and the town has grown along it, with a denser centre near the water and newer blocks spreading onto the lower slopes.
Around the built-up area, the lines thin out quickly. Roads climb into the wooded hills in loose curves, and the pattern of fields and farm tracks is small and irregular.
