Chūru stands in northern Rajasthan, where the farmland of Shekhawati gives way to the sandy expanses of the Thar Desert. On the map, the town is a dense, rounded cluster of lanes with little sprawl and open land on every side. The town is known for its merchant havelis. These large courtyard houses, with painted walls and carved balconies, were built by trading families who made their fortunes elsewhere.
